New Logo!

I haven't been very active online lately. Things are crazy busy and although I've been baking, haven't really had much time to post.

But here is our new logo! :)

Airport Fire Engine Cake

I was asked to do a fire engine cake but with a catch.... it has to be green!!! :)

It was an airport fire engine!

I don't know about you, but I've never seen an airport fire engine (probably a good thing ;))

This was a toughie, I had to go research!!

Add a red velvet cake under a light green fondant. If you've ever worked with red velvet you know it can often bleed through icing and fondant. So I already had some dilemmas to work through. But here it is:

Chanel cupcakes

A makeup artist I know had posted these fab chanel cupcakes on her page.  I don't know who made them but they were a Chanel lipstick, a Chanel blush and 3 makeup brushes.

So... they looked pretty simple so i thought I would give them a try :)

I hate baking cupcakes so I went to Let's Cupcake in Newark and ordered some dark chocolate with raspberry mousse cupcakes.  I tried this place before and they were pretty good but I was a lil disappointed with the fake cream and the crappy service this time.
They had my cupcakes sitting on the counter when I went in... should have known they wouldn't taste amazing but oh well.  Its still better than my attempt at cupcakes ;)

So i made the "topping" and this is a quick preview of one of them:

I'll post more pics since I took a few before they were eaten :)

Maria's "you're a perfect 40"th Birthday

A good friend of mine who moved away came to visit and celebrate her 40th Birthday! A big milestone for anyone. So I decided to make a special cake for her in her favorite color - pink!

As an extra special touch I decided to try out my checkerboard cake pan kit. I bought it in JoAnns and it was only $16.99. It has a lil white plastic ring in it and three 1" cake pans. It was a bit more work than a regular cake and sadly not as fab as the pics made it look. I used a regular cake mix and not their recipe and colored half of it pink.

Long story short, you can see the results in the pics which I will try to add tomorrow.

I used the Duff pink fondant which actually tasted awful - very food coloring like. I learnt that this fondant needs to be worked on super fast if your cake was previously frozen. It goes rock hard with the cold! I also made 4 characters but I'll blog about them separately! I also added black diamond shapes and some edible diamonds from cakecrystals.com(fabulous taste and very shiny if you add a drop of oil) with a banner for "You're the Perfect 40".

Here are some pics:

What's New Cupcake?

There I was wandering the aisles of Michaels one afternoon (you know, as you do, when you're looking for inspiration ;) ) and I notice this shiny covered book with interesting cupcakes on it.
So I think to myself "wow, that is so cool, I wanna try those out"

Fast-forward a few months and its my youngest son (who you will see me refer to as "the evil child" on a regular basis but that's a whole other blog ;) ) 's thanksgiving feast. So I decide to try out the turkey cupcake recipe. :-D

Now, when I have to make a lot of something I try to find shortcuts - especially since I have a pretty chaotic life. I saw some cranberry orange mini muffins at Safeway and thought "perfect!". What 2year old is going to eat a whole cupcake anyway?

I substituted a couple of other things(didn't have the green non-pareils and only had special k with berries as my cereal of choice) and voila!

A Beginning

So I finally created a blog for my cakes. Don't know how often this will be updated but I'm sure if nothing else, you will see lots of pictures of whatever cakes I make!
