Maria's "you're a perfect 40"th Birthday

A good friend of mine who moved away came to visit and celebrate her 40th Birthday! A big milestone for anyone. So I decided to make a special cake for her in her favorite color - pink!

As an extra special touch I decided to try out my checkerboard cake pan kit. I bought it in JoAnns and it was only $16.99. It has a lil white plastic ring in it and three 1" cake pans. It was a bit more work than a regular cake and sadly not as fab as the pics made it look. I used a regular cake mix and not their recipe and colored half of it pink.

Long story short, you can see the results in the pics which I will try to add tomorrow.

I used the Duff pink fondant which actually tasted awful - very food coloring like. I learnt that this fondant needs to be worked on super fast if your cake was previously frozen. It goes rock hard with the cold! I also made 4 characters but I'll blog about them separately! I also added black diamond shapes and some edible diamonds from cakecrystals.com(fabulous taste and very shiny if you add a drop of oil) with a banner for "You're the Perfect 40".

Here are some pics:
